A recent upgrade at Denver Fire Station 4 is delivering immediate improvements to response time, safety, and long-term performance at one of the city’s busiest stations.
As the general contractor under an on-call agreement with the City and County of Denver, Sky Blue Builders partnered with Noble Overhead Door to replace aging apparatus bay doors with new bi-fold systems designed for speed, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Door opening time has been reduced from approximately 16 seconds to just 7 seconds, allowing crews to get on the road faster. Visibility for drivers exiting the bay has also improved, enhancing safety during emergency response. The new system incorporates fewer moving parts, reducing long-term maintenance needs and associated costs.
Executing the work required precise coordination within an active fire station environment.
The existing doors were removed and replaced within a single day to maintain security and uninterrupted operations. In advance of installation, UPM Mechanical relocated gas-fed tube heaters over a two-day period to ensure proper clearance and performance of the new system.
Beyond performance metrics, the upgrade is already improving day-to-day conditions for station personnel.
The new doors operate significantly quieter than the previous system, a meaningful change in a facility responding to 20 to 25 calls per day. Firefighters who rest in close proximity to the bays immediately noticed the difference.
This project reflects Sky Blue Builders’ experience delivering improvements in active, mission-critical environments where continuity, coordination, and safety are essential.
