Sky Blue Builders served as the prime contractor for the design-build delivery of the Deployable Structures Laboratory for the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base. The approximately 4,300-square-foot facility was purpose-built to support the testing and evaluation of deployable structures within a secure laboratory environment.
The project included construction of a large open laboratory volume with significant clear height, supporting specialized research activities and equipment requirements. Sky Blue Builders coordinated closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, AFRL, designers, and key trade partners to integrate structural steel, specialized MEP systems, fire protection, EIFS, and interior finishes while meeting federal safety, security, and performance standards.
Delivered through a collaborative design-build process, the project required disciplined coordination and adaptability as design and program requirements evolved. Sky Blue Builders successfully balanced technical complexity, budget constraints, and schedule demands to deliver a high-performance research facility supporting AFRL’s long-term operational needs.
